Johnny Moss RIP
<!–more–While recently visiting Las Vegas we stopped downtown. The easiest place to park was still the same, The Horseshoe, which used to be The Mint. The vallet parking is pretty fast and friendly and when it is too hot (now), you can wait for your car inside where it is air conditioned. My daughter had never been to Vegas before so you just have to bring a newbie downtown. The Freemont Street Experience alone is worth the effort to get there if you are staying on the strip. We looked at the wall that displays the WSOP winners and the first is my old boss, Johnny Moss. Some say mean things about him but I didn’t see him in that light. To me he was the very first card room manager to hire women dealers. Although we were not highly regarded by our peers, we were welcomed with open arms by the card players (mostly men). Many of the male dealers felt we were taking their jobs away and that this was a male domain. Women were waitresses or showgirls. Well, done that already and now I want a job sitting on my butt in the middle of a card game while people throw me money after evrey hand I deal. Oh NO buddy, I want this job too. I had been to every card room in town looking for a place to break in. I was trained by a dealer with many years under his belt, so I was trained very old school. Then it happened, the dear ol’ man leased a card room & soon I was one of many to be the first women poker dealers on the strip at The Alladdin. Thanks Johnny, from all the dealers you helped out with rent money while realizing work was slow or someone was in a jam. Thank you Johnny, for being able to look to the future and being first in Las Vegas to do something no one else in town would do untill they followed your lead. Peace to you and yours.
